In-depth Antenatal Education

There’s a lot to learn on the subject of pregnancy, labour and birth! Whilst we don’t expect you to gain a medical qualification during the relatively short time you’re pregnant, having a firm understanding of the key aspects that you will, and may, come across will provide many benefits you and your birth partner. As they say, knowledge is power!

Maternity care can be quite different to other areas of healthcare; if you break your arm, for example, you tend to just get it fixed without questions asked or options provided. Maternity care is much more focused on the individual and their wants and needs. There are many options to choose from, each with their pros and cons. No two women will ever have the exact same pregnancy, birth or baby, which is why it's so important that you are equipped to make the best, informed decisions for you and your family.

I provide detailed, evidence-based antenatal education. Utilising the latest research, recommendations and guidance from bodies such as Cochrane, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Gynaecologists (RCOG). I delve into the statistics behind these guidelines and recommendations to allow you to make your own personal decisions with your care.

What does 'evidence-based' mean?

The conclusions of good quality research studies, or a 'systematic review' of all available studies on a particular topic, forms the 'evidence' which then influences healthcare practice. As a midwife I'm up to date with research, guidelines and protocols, so during my antenatal classes I'm able to explain the statistics and rationale behind available care plans, procedures and so on, which can then enable you to make the best decisions for your individual circumstances.
